British efforts to knock Turkey out of the war were equally unsuccessful. A bold attempt to seize the Dardanelles and open the Straits to Allied shipping, with the added benefit of almost certainly forcing Turkey to make peace, failed spectacularly. Neither the British Indian Army in Mesopotamia nor British forces in Egypt made much progress. By the summer of 1915, the Allied position in the Middle East had deteriorated substantially. This provided an opportunity for dissident Arabs opposed to Turkish rule to make a bold bid for the establishment of an independent Arab state in return for rebelling against their Ottoman overlords.
